List Building Via Google Adwords

January 9th, 2008 Rob Posted in PPC Advertising No Comments »

Google was the first company to make serious money out of selling advertising services on the Internet, with a service called Google AdWords. Prior to AdWords, the basic model of advertising on the internet was based off of the display rate & frequency. You paid a certain amount per thousand impressions, & it ran like magazine advertising.

Google AdWords changed this; you only paid for the display of your advertising that a customer clicked on. AdWords, coupled with Google’s search engine popularity, redefined marketing on the Internet. The other major benefit (beyond a nearly unheard of “Pay for what’s actually gotten”) is that AdWords tend to get targeted searchers.

Making AdWords work for you is a little bit trickier, as an affiliate marketer. You want the clicks to hit your web site, not your vendor’s web site; you want the customer to go through your squeeze page (a simple form that asks them for their email address) before directing them through your affiliate link to your vendor’s site. To make this work in your favor, you have to understand how AdWords work.

First, pick AdWords that are short - one to three words, tops. Don’t forget to pick a couple of common mis-spellings of the word you are running with. Second, make certain that the place where the ‘pay per click’ advertising takes the customer is optimized for humans as much as it’s for Google’s search engine algorithm. In particular, a bare “squeeze page” will rapidly get your AdWord rates skyrocketing, because of how Google ranks pages & sorts by “relevant content”.

Next, make certain your content remains fresh. People are searching for information on the Internet, & you really need to provide enough information so that the person who hits your site feels that they have spent their time well. While you need your AdWord to appear in your site for search engine optimization, make certain that it shows up in complete sentences, & with not very much more than 3% density. More than 3% density (3% of the words being the same turn of phrase) will cause Google to think that you are gaming the system - & they will be right.

Finally, once you get people on your list, do not forget the basics of relationship building with your readers. Give them updated content at least weekly, so that they have a solid reason to come back every week, & will expect your newsletter in their inbox. You want repeat visitors, & repeat buyers to make your business thrive, & for that, you really need to give them a reason to keep coming back to the web site. (This is also why it is important to have multiple vendors that you are affiliated with, so that you can run out new content every week to broadcast to people who’re already on your list.)

Pay Per Click advertising can generate a lot of traffic for you for minimal cash outlays. Use it to build the business you have been dreaming of.

Affiliate Marketing With Google Adwords

January 5th, 2008 Rob Posted in PPC Advertising 1 Comment »

The quickest way to generate targeted traffic & start earning commissions with an affiliate marketing business is to use google adwords. One does not even need a website of their own to make money on line using adwords. Traffic can be sent directly to an affiliate link.

Even though this is the easiest way to make money on line I recommend those who advertise on google send traffic to their own website first for a couple of reasons. First of all traffic sent to a information pre sell site tends to provide much higher sales conversions than just using direct affiliate links.

Secondly google has recently tightened its quality scoring of websites making the cost per click skyrocket for many who were sending traffic to direct links. This has priced many affiliate marketers out of using adwords & is widely known as the “google slap”.

I’ve found a good way to improve quality scores & lower cost per click is to write topical blogs & send adwords traffic to them. The blogs can have the affiliate links included in the text. For best results the text links should be the same or related to the keywords bidded on in an adwords campaign.

A critical part of adwords success is the ad itself… The ad needs to have a high clickthrough rate to recieve a lower cost per click. An ad should have keywords that the advertiser is bidding on included in the title. Many ads should be created & tested. The ads that have low clickthrough rates meaning usually below 1 percent should be deleted.

One technique that can be often used is dynamic keyword insertion. With dynamic keyword insertion google will put the keywords in the title of an ad automatically. To use dynamic keyword insertion in place of the title one must put {keyword:default}. In place of default a keyword or phrase should be used in case a keyword phrase bidded on is too long for google to automatically insert the keyword.

Keywords are another important consideration in using google adwords. The better keywords to bid on are usually specific lower traffic words rather than the higher traffic general terms. For example a keyword like “music” will not convert to sales as well as words like specific songs or artists names.

The more closely the keywords are related to the topic of the website the better… Just like ads underperforming keywords with low clickthrough rates should also be deleted & new keywords periodically tested.

Where many go wrong with adwords is they set up an ad campaign & never go back to make changes. In order to be successful using adwords an affiliate marketer must continually make adjustments to fine tune their campaigns. This means they must constantly be testing new ads & keywords & deleting underperformers. Clear? If one does this consistently an adwords campaign is likely to cost much less & be more profitable.

“Get Google Ads Free” Review - Does It Stack Up?

January 1st, 2008 Rob Posted in PPC Advertising No Comments »

Many of you’ll have come across an ebook called “Get Google Ads Free”. The author of this book (Dr. John Cohen) claims to have received $87 million in free pay per clicks (adwords/overture etc) over a 9 year period using a secret of his. But does “Get Google Ads Free” stack up to his outrageous claims?

When I first saw the sales page for this ebook I was going through a steep learning curve with google adwords & was searching for anything to reduce costs & improve conversion rates.

When I saw this I thought my prayers may have been answered. Even though I was in a desperate state of mind I was skeptical of the hyped up sales page. I mean, how can anyone possibly get $87 million in free ppc’s. But alas, curiosity got the better of me & I bought the ebook.

As I was expecting some amazing, unbelievable secret technique, disappointment set in upon first aquaintance. There was no easy, clever way to get adwords completely free with little work (though if we are being honest, it does not exist).

As I read on how ever, my disappointment disappeared. What the ebook is based around is a simple, clever marketing strategy that has been used before. However, not many people on line know about this strategy. While it does not magically give free ppc’s, if used properly, it should offset the costs.

When he first explained this, I slapped myself on the head mouthing “why did not I think of this?” It’s one of those things that is oh so simple, yet very clever at the same time. The author goes on to explain how to use it so we can not just offset our adwords costs, but also how to profit from it… He does this in great detail & I was surprised :o by how much content he crammed into it… Another thing I liked, was that it was not entirely confined to this strategy. He gave lots of good information on optimizing your adwords account & even went into some offline advertising.

The ebook is well written & presented. It’s 125 pages long, yet it does not drag. He has also put together an excellent, extensive affiliate section which is even longer than the sales page.

So, is Get Google Ads Free worth the $67 asking price? If you’re searching for completely free adwords with no strings attached, then keep looking (and looking, & looking). But if you want to know how you can offset or at least reduce PPC costs you should consider Get Google Ads Free. Even if you do not use the central idea  of the ebook , there is enough sideline information to justify its purchace.

Unfortunately when guides are written by the one author what invariably happens is that one product becomes a rehash of an older product with just a couple new tips thrown in for good measure, something similar to a singer releasing a greatest hits album with one or two new songs.

Pay Per Click Advertising Models

December 24th, 2007 Rob Posted in PPC Advertising 1 Comment »

Conversions are your true determinant of success, as far as PPC Advertising is concerned. Even though you might be easily able to generate immense traffic for your website, you’ll be at a enormous loss if you’re unable to convert them into sales. There is more. This is mainly because this form of advertising works on the principle of ‘cost for every click’ - you pay for every visitor that clicks on your ad; & not earning sales will land you in trouble.

PPC works on a variety of advertising models, & you really need to select the one that is best suited to your business. There is more. The following are some of the most popular models followed in this field:

1) Cost per Click ? It literally means an advertiser pays the search engine for every click generated through the latter. The amount of commission is a predetermined amount bid by the advertiser himself in lieu of getting his ad positioned on a search engine result page. The minimum amount of bid usually is $0.01, whereas the maximum can even go up to $10 & more. Most search engines also charge advertisers for opening an ad account with them.

2) Push versus Pull ? Known as Contextual Advertising versus Search Advertising, this model works on ‘pushing’ ads on third-party sites, & ‘pulling’ users through sponsored ad links. There is more. The former is a process wherein advertisements are randomly placed on web pages that have relevant content to what’s stated in the ad copy. And, the latter deals with the simple method of placing sponsored links on SERPs. Here, your ad will be displayed when a user searches for the particular keyword that you’re catering to.

3) Cost per Impression ? Advertisers pay a predetermined amount for per thousand impressions. Also known as CPM, this Pay Per Click Advertising model is popular with products that command enormous respect & ‘impression’ rates in the on line marketplace.

4) Flat Rate ? Search engines get a fixed amount of money for running the whole campaign on their sites. Advertisers pay a standard fee ? which can be as meagre as $1 every month ? to keep their campaign going, irrespective of the number of clicks generated.

5) Pay Per Call ? This model is relatively new & quite suitable to all sorts of marketers. Here, the advertiser needs to make payment only when a visitor actually takes the first step towards a prospective sale by calling him up. Even though this might reduce the earnings of search engines, it will definitely improve the conversion rates of business owners’ websites.

Almost all popular search engines offer the choice of the aforementioned Pay Per Click Campaigns for advertising purposes. Devote considerable amount of time on your budgeting before finalising one for your on line marketing plans.

Why Most People Lose Money When Using PPC

December 16th, 2007 Rob Posted in PPC Advertising No Comments »

There are affiliate marketers out there why rely mostly on ppc ads, & do well with their efforts. Then there’s the affiliates who sink hundreds or thousands of dollars $ into PPC ads & get very little in return. What is the difference here? The ones who do well are testing their ads. There is more. The majority of the people using ppc ads are not testing them at all, & thus are losing money… This leads to them leaving the ppc game after deciding that it just does not work. Ppc certainly can work, you just have to know how to conduct the right tests to make it work.

Test your keywords. Right. When choosing your keywords you likely thought very carefully about each one & what business it might bring you… But if the keywords are not working, yank ‘em. They can be replaced with other words in order to make more effective & less expensive advertising. Even if your advertising is working to bring in business, it’s still ineffective if it costs more than it’s bringing in. Choose words that are not too competitive to cost more than they bring in, but that are still popular. Then test those words periodically to see which ones are performing.

Take your time. To get the most accurate results will take some time. If the ads are not performing the first day or week they run, that isn’t an indication that they will not actually be in a month. Give them some time to produce results before evaluating their performance.

Test your positions. Clear? If you’re constantly trying to get the first spot, & only that first spot, you’re probably spending too much, & the advertising may not actually be making financial sense. And so… Settle for less. There is more. The second, third, & fourth positions are really just as good & cost less than the first. Test different positions to see which ones are bringing in the money relative to how much they’re costing. You might be surprised :o at the ratio.

Test your ads. Clear? It could be that the ad copy you’re using is just not working. If you think you chose good keywords, attempt rewriting the ads to see if that makes a difference. The ad might not make sense to some one unfamiliar with your product. The ads might just be written poorly & generate no excitement. Try active words that a viewer can not help but be interested in. If there is still no improvement, attempt new keywords, then rewriting the ads with the new keywords. There is more. There’re many variables to be tested, so keep at it until you find the ones that are going to work for you.

Watch your numbers closely, keeping track of what changes have been made. Give each change time to elicit an increase or decrease in sales. There is more. Testing does not have to be complicated, but it can take time & cost money… But in the world of ppc advertising, it always takes money to make money… Just be sure that you’ll be getting your back in the form of profits.

How To Use Google Adwords To Sell Your Next Home

December 8th, 2007 Rob Posted in PPC Advertising No Comments »

If you work the ‘pay per click’ ad right, you can get high quality leads just for your market at the lowest price… for google Ad Words, that is 15 cents. Go to google & click on Advertising for an account setup.

The secret to using Google Adwords is how you list your keywords.

We are using what google calls a “broad search”

A broad search will list your ad when an actual person uses all the words in your keyword phrase & in any order the search places those words.

Keywords are words that you think people will search on that matches what you have to market to them.

Rule 1: never use a single word keyword. It is too broad & will not work for many and various reasons I will not go into here. Rule 2. Always use very exact & precise keyword phrases that spell out exactly what you think your customer will be search with.

The phrase ‘Lake House’ will get you the wrong customer, ‘Lake House on Lake Placid’ will get you virtually everyone that has some interest in lake houses on lake placid, the phrase “Home for sale on Lake Placid” will get you both buyers & sellers interested in homes on Lake Placid”.

The Secret is to link your keyword to your city name or location.

For example:

‘home for sale Conroe’

Now the only time your ad appears on the google search results page is when some one puts in those exact words in any order.

example: “Conroe home for sale” would also get placed in the end results page.

But if some one put in “home for sale” or just the word “sale” then you would not get listed, nor would you want to be listed with such a wide range of variables.

Now if the term “conroe TX homes for sale” is placed in the search box, your ad will still appear. Notice the search term contained an extra word “TX”.

Well the search engine will ignore all extra words or letters like plurals (homes) placed in the search box as long as it contains all the words you listed in your keyword phrase.

Understanding that concept allows us to improve the impressions on these two keyword phrases by removing any small word that may or may not get used by a searcher. The word “For” should be removed since some searchers will just us the phrase: “homes sales conroe tx” or “conroe home fro sale” in this case the word for which is not important in the search was left out in one phrase & misspelled in the other search but if we eliminated the “for” we would have gotten the hit from either of those key word searches.

So now our list should look like this:

home sale conroe

home sale conroe

If you have other names for the area you really need to add those to the list

home sale lake conroe will get even more targeted hit.

home sale north Houston

Since Conroe is located north of Houston. And people who look to buy homes in Conroe, may be willing to buy one next door in Conroe.

Just keep your target customer in mind as you design the phrases. You can ask yourself. ‘What would I put in a search engine if I wanted X?’

Pay Per Click - Tiny Tweaks Mean a Lot

December 4th, 2007 Rob Posted in PPC Advertising No Comments »

I am often asked whether changing the words in the body of an Adwords advert can make a difference to the response & click through rate.

I usually give my standard answer. Yes, but why do not you attempt it for yourself.

I am always amazed by the number of people who set up an Adwords campaign & then just leave it to stand or fall by itself… They do not seem to realise, or care that it’s perfectly possible to dramatically improve the response rate with some careful tuning. I think it’s sheer laziness that they expect their first effort to be the best that they can do.

Google gives so many clever tools to analyse every aspect of a campaign that it’s a crime not to use them. Especially when the prize for a little extra work is a higher position on the page, more traffic to your site & a reduced cost per click. Why would not you want to make the most of your budget?

I know from bitter experience in my days as a ‘pay per click’ novice how easy it’s to waste hundreds of dollars $ for no discernible result. In fact apart from gambling I think Google is one of the most efficient ways to empty your wallet yet invented, if you are not careful.

However, I’m a lot smarter now & I always spend the first few days of any campaign, with a low daily budget & careful daily monitoring of my results. Believe me, it pays off.

I recently ran a campaign to attract visitors to sign up for my newsletter. I researched my keywords, built a list, wrote an advert, then created two slightly different headlines using Google’s ad variations option & left it to run for a few days.

When it got to a hundred clicks, which is my usual first checkpoint, I could see that one of the headlines was a clear leader. It was scoring a click through rate of around 2.9%; much higher than the other two. I dropped the two weaker ones & then created two more variations, but this time I kept the winning headline the same & changed the body copy around a little.

Once again I waited for about a hundred clicks, which came faster this time because I was using the best performing headline. To my surprise, I found that one of the new body copy versions had improved the click through rate from 2.9% to 3.8%; a significant jump.

Two further rounds of testing with some slight changes to the headline first & then the body copy again, raised the score of the best performer to 4.2%. But the best thing was that I was able to reduce my maximum bid price by a third yet still maintain my average position on the search page at number 3 or 4. So now I’m getting more clicks for less money.

Of course I have not finished there. The next step is to weed out the non-performing keywords, segment the best ones into two shorter lists & then create specific ad groups for each, with more relevant wording in each advert, to see if I can improve the performance still further.

Yes, it takes extra work, but the pay off is well worth it… Once I’ve reached a click through rate of 5%, I’ll double my budget, safe in the knowledge that my return on investment is exactly where I want it to be.
