February 18th, 2008 Rob Posted in PPC Advertising No Comments »

Is Google Adwords giving you trouble? Are you having trouble trying to set up your Google Adwords campaign properly? Have you been advertising with Adwords for awhile now without having much success? Have you ever read a good Google Adwords guide book, preferably one by Perry Marshall? If not, what in the world are you thinking?

It’s true that you can make an enormous amount of money by using Google Adwords, but you must learn what you are doing first. Just like anything else in life, this is a learning process. The rewards are great once you have learned the lesson & taken action, but you can easily lose your shirt if you do not find out the right way to do things first. Think about it like this, would you play the stock market without learning what you are doing first, or at least hiring some one who knows what they aredoing? That would be a seriously ignorant maneuver, yet people do it with Google Adwords all the time. Actually, not just Google Adwords, but with other ‘pay per click’ search engines also, like Yahoo & MSN.

The Perry Marshall Definitive Adwords Guide is the top-rated book on Google Adwords, without question. It was co-written by Bryan Todd who is one of Perry’s top assistants & also a member of his coaching faculty. The book is 113 pages long & is updated every year at no extra charge. These guys live & breathe Google Adwords & they constantly test everything that they do in order to find better ways to beat the Adwords system. Those that own the book have a enormous advantage over virtually everyone else because they arereaping the rewards of all the hard work that these guys put in with the free updates.

If you have not bought & read a good Google Adwords book, especially Perry Marshall’s Definitive Guide, you are wasting your time, your money & your not seeing the total benefit you could be getting out of your Google Adwords campaigns. I highly recommend that you get more information about a good Google Adwords guidebook.

What is Pay Per Click Advertising?

February 14th, 2008 Rob Posted in PPC Advertising No Comments »

The beauty with this format is that you’re always in control of what you spend & how & when your ads will appear.

More & more of your customers are searching for relevant content online, as search engines seem to offer them instant & highly relevant results. Clear? If you can advertise within these results, then you have a much better chance of capturing them at a time when they’re searching for a product or service like yours.

If you use CPC or PPC ads (cost per click, or ‘pay per click’ ads), make certain that your heading & content makes it completely obvious which services you’re offering. If you don’t, you will find that a lot of irrelevant people will click on your ads, which will result in a poor ROI (return on investment).

The ‘pay per click’ advertising systems can work very well for your business, but if you’re going to set up the campaigns yourself, do spend the time researching how to write ads, as well as looking at tips on how to get your cost per click rate down to a minimum.

In text only ads, you’re only interested in clicks from people who are potential relevant customers. Don’t be too worried about being at the top of the ad list, as this will cost you more money… Basically, PPC (sometimes referred to as pay per click) advertising all comes down to how many people click on your advert. If you want clicks, there’re a limited number of outlets that will match the control & price flexibility of advertising on Google Adwords & similar services.

If you would prefer to take on another company who gives a ppc management service then make certain you find experts who have experience & knowledge of the ‘pay per click’ format. There’re many companies out there offering this service, but very few who actually do any work for you.

Review Of SpeedPPC

February 6th, 2008 Rob Posted in PPC Advertising No Comments »

It’s not everyday that a software you have used for the first time blows you away. Well, SpeedPPC did that to me. And so… So far so good. Wow is all I can say right now. First off, I want to mention that this isn’t an inexpensive software, BUT, it did pay itself off in one week! Now that left me in disbelief to say the least. OK. SpeedPPC also doesn’t require any monthly fees, only that one-time payment.

The tool is by Jay Stockwell, who works with Allan Gardyne of http://AssociatePrograms.com. This is the first product Allan’s released in the approx. 10 years he’s been in affiliate marketing, & it is a complete PPC tool & a quality product. Allan waited a long time to release a product, but boy did he hit gold with this one.

What SpeedPPC essentially does is it allows you to bid for competitive searches & allows you to bid for hundreds or thousands of low-competition phrases. Not only that, it helps you build targeted AdWords Ads, helps you build hundreds of Adgroups, AND it uses a solution to build highly targeted landing pages (all the above is done AUTOMATICALLY by the software). With all that automation, you can go for thousands of keywords that are low-search volume…and therefore low cost per click.

You can also use the SpeedPPC System to automatically create massive “long tail” keyword lists & then bind them together into hundreds of tight, small ad groups that would normally take weeks to complete.

An example…If you wanted an “iPod Shuffle”, would not you be content seeing an ad targeted to that exact keyword which, & when clicked on, took you to a page targeted to that exact iPod with a picture, description & link to where you could buy it? That’s what Speed PPC actually does… & it can do it very rapidly for thousands of ads & pages.

In the background, this will allow you to receive good Google Quality scores. As any PPC marketer is aware, if you get good Quality Scores, you pay much less per click.

To put all this into perspective…Everything that SpeedPPC can do for you in minutes, it would normally have taken you many weeks to accomplish. It is that powerful!

If you have been struggling with PPC campaigns, by now, you are probably cramping on your sides after reading what this software can potentially do for your ROI.

SpeedPPC is highly recommended if you are serious about making money on line using PPC advertising.

Adwords Split Testing

February 2nd, 2008 Rob Posted in PPC Advertising No Comments »

Google Adwords is a ‘pay per click’ program that allows you to put ads on Google, other search engines, & even ‘non-search’ websites. There is more. The object is to write a targeted ad that gets a lot of clicks. There is more. The more clicks you get, the less you pay for each click.

One way to improve your ads over time is to split test them. You can run two or more versions of your ad & have Google show each ad approximately the same number of times. Note: you have to go into your campaign settings to tell Google to show your ads evenly instead of optimizing for you.

So once you’re showing two versions of your ad, how do you know when you have a winner? If the first ad gets 3 clicks after showing 30 times & the second ad gets 4 clicks after showing 31 times, is the second ad better? Google assigns a number to the ratio of how many clicks you get versus how many times the ad shows. There is more. This is known as Click Through Rate or CTR. So even though the second ad has a better CTR, is the ad better than the first?

There is just not enough data to tell. On the other hand, if the first ad gets 29 clicks after showing 30 times & the second ad gets 1 click after showing 31 times, do you think you might know by then? Probably so. But the way to tell is to run a statistical formula on the numbers called a Chi Square.

This article will not go into detail about how to calculate the actual results, but when the numbers are entered in the right place in the formula, you can tell with degrees of certainty whether or not you have a winner.

Once you have determined that you have a winning ad, the goal is to archive the loser & write a new ad to attempt to beat the winner. Over time, your CTR will get better & better… This means you’ll pay less per click & have much more effective ads.

You can use this same formula to split test & improve:
1) Opt In Boxes where you ask for a name & email address
2) Sales Pages where you sell your product
3) Order Pages where you ask for the customer’s payment information
4) Email messages where you ask the customer to take some sort of action

Constant improvement is the key to making money online. If you do not test, track, & improve, your business will most likely become less & less successful as competitors pass you by.

If you’re split testing with Google Adwords, then check out http://www.WinnerAlert.com for a solution that will monitor all of your split tests, perform statistical analysis on them, & send you an email when it is time to throw out a losing ad & beat the winning version. Keywords- Keyword Research & Selection

January 29th, 2008 Rob Posted in PPC Advertising No Comments »

Keywords are the starting point for effective websites. Right. Websites, web pages, PPC campaigns (Google Adwords) are built around keywords. But what do we mean by Keywords?

The term “Keyword” has two meanings depending on whether you’re :

  • Search for something
  • Writing a webpage

From the perspective of an Internet searcher a keyword is the word or words used to search for something. For Example if you were searching for a information about cruise holidays you would go straight to your favourite search engine & enter:

cruise holidays or cruise holidays Caribbean, cruise holidays Med, cruise holidays cheap etc

These are the keywords from the perspective of the searcher.

Notice that even though we have used the term keyword the searcher usually enters more than one, 2-3 word searches are the most common.

From the perspective of an Internet publisher i.e. some one who creates web site or writes web pages a keyword represents the topic or theme for a web page/website. For example if you were going to write an article on Mediterranean cruises then the page keyword would be Mediterranean cruises, & the page content would all be focused on that.

Keyword Research?

Keyword research is about finding out what Internet searches are actually searching for. Are they searching for:

cruise holidays or cruise holidays Caribbean, cruise holidays Med, cruise holidays, Mediterranean cruises cheap, Romantic Mediterranean cruises etc

You do not want to make a website or write a webpage on Romantic Mediterranean cruises, if no one, or very few people search for them.

Keyword Research Tools

There are number of tools available for keyword research, however the main ones are :
Overture Keyword Suggestion Tool- Overture is a free tool & can be often used directly from the overture web site or through many derivative programs.

Wordtracker - is commercial software specifically developed for keyword research. They do offer a free limited trial version on their website.

Keyword Selection

Keyword research will produce a list of keywords. However the next & most important step is keyword selection. This involves deciding which keywords are the best ones to use. This isn’t simply choosing the most popular! There’re other criteria to evaluate like ..

  • which are easier
  • which keywords are more profitable
  • which keywords will generate more clicks.

The PPC Mechanism - Part II

January 25th, 2008 Rob Posted in PPC Advertising No Comments »

Pay per Click advertising works best in a strategised format. Go step by step & you’re sure to be successful at getting targeted traffic & conversions on your website. The first two phases in this process are foundation & induction. In the first stage, you really need to analyze your keywords & target the customer base. And, in the second stage, you decide the platform & rates at which you wish to run your campaign.

The third & very crucial stage here is development. This phase is all about getting involved with your potential customers. Here, you really need to establish a rapport with users by catering to their problems & preferences. Develop your PPC ad campaign in order to attract people for a click. Keep the following points in mind when writing an ad copy for your product or service:

1. Make the title catchy & include your main keyword. Make it relevant & informative with regard to your product.

2. Description should describe your product in short. Make use of attractive words like cheap, free, discounted, etc., but only when you actually have such offers.

3. Use trademark terms if you’re the original manufacturer of the product. It’ll help you in making a mark amongst your competitors.

With the help of these tips, you’ll surely be easily able to come up with an appealing ad copy & drive traffic to your site. Always remember that a user should be easily able to find solutions in your advertisements. By example, if you manufacture weight-loss pills, using phrases like ‘lose weight in five days’ in your description will catch surfers’ attention instantly.

According to PPC Experts, it’s advisable to constantly update your site by creating new pages or editing the existing ones. Also, attempt & implement search engine guidelines on your web pages as & when possible.

The next phase in your campaign should be the deployment or launching phase, i.e., when you actually float your campaign on the search engine & keep a constant watch on it… All search websites function differently & have their own editorial guidelines with regard to Pay per Click services. Choose the advertising model that best suits your strategy & business.

It is imperative that you monitor the effectiveness of your keywords & the CTR or CPA generated through your campaign. Make alterations when required because you can easily lose money in such marketing strategies.

The PPC Mechanism - Part I

January 21st, 2008 Rob Posted in PPC Advertising No Comments »

The simple mechanism behind PPC advertising is to pay for every click on your ad. Search engines allow advertisers to bid for listings on their result pages. There is more. The positioning of these ads is directly proportional to the amount of bid. In turn, the search engine gets money for every click generated through its site.

Though this sounds a little complex, experts insist that this form of advertising is highly effective in getting websites an increased amount of traffic inflow, & thus better revenue generation. However, it’s important to understand the methodology behind this service, or else you might end up losing money in your campaign.

Pay per Click services involves the following mechanisms:

>> It’s important to allot a budget to your campaign. And, always remember to use this means of advertising as an additional service to your main marketing strategy. The trick lies in targeting the right keywords. Your campaign gives you a great chance to find out about the conversion rates of these keywords, in order to further strengthen your search engine marketing process.

>> You might be excited about getting increased traffic to your site. But, do not forget that more clicks mean more money spent on your part. Thus, to balance out your ROI, it’s imperative that you get conversions. So… Segregate your prospective buyer segment & target them, keeping your long-term goal in mind.

>> After you have decided on your target keywords & customers, distribute the keywords on basis of estimated click-through rates & conversion rates. Also, determine the search engines you wish to cater to.

>> Getting traffic might be easy, but retaining it on to the site can be very difficult… For this to happen, you should construct a site that is both appealing & informative. Users click on your ads expecting to derive relevant information from your website. Offering them a site which isn’t easily navigable or irrelevant in terms of content will put off the users. There is more. Thus, make your landing pages attractive to retain visitors’ attention.

>> Enlist the ways in which you want to track your campaign. This task can be done by a PPC expert, who is well aware of the methodology behind such services

>> Keep a tab on your competitors’ advertising gimmicks. Unintentionally, he might just pass on a profitable clue to you.

These steps comprise the ‘discovery & design’ aspects of Pay per Click campaign. The next level is developing & deploying your campaign in the on line marketplace.

PPC - Strategy or Money Pit?

January 17th, 2008 Rob Posted in PPC Advertising No Comments »

‘Wide diversification is only required when investors do not understand what they’re doing.’ ? Warren Buffett

If you look at the title of this article you wonder what a financial quote from investor Warren Buffett has to do with Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising.

Well, PPC does provide diversification, & if you are a marketer you’re investing time & resources in a tool designed to provide a return on your investment, but this diversification, while diverse, gives only a marginal return on investment.

The use of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) techniques is certainly less costly while providing greater long-term returns.

‘If past history was all there was to the game, the richest people would be librarians.’ ? Warren Buffet

Warren Buffet is one of the richest men in the world, yet even he understands that past performance or even past knowledge does not always help you manage future changes.

PPC is propped up as the gold standard in advertising. I am certainly not saying it is a horrid investment, but the truth is why should you pay for something you could get at no cost? SEO is a tool that may take a little while to find effect, but in the end can allow a greater impact that using a tool that gives only short-term hits, which go away when your advertising funds run dry.

‘Investing should be more like watching paint dry or watching grass grow. If you want excitement, take $800 & go straight to Las Vegas.’ ? Paul Samuelson

When you view PPC & SEO in light of the quote above you can link PPC with the $800 in Vegas & SEO with watching paint dry. It may be more exciting going to Vegas & blowing some cash, however it’s the slow & steady progression of paint drying that allows SEO to be noticed long after you have lost the airline ticket stubs from Vegas metaphorically speaking.

It is possible to come away from this article believing I’ve no use for PPC advertising. Do you follow? The truth is I actually believe moderate & strategic use of PPC can possess some short-term value, but I also think that many on line businesses are taking the cue from Tom Hanks in the 1986 movie, ‘Money Pit’, they just keep flushing money away without ever really getting their business to the level they desire.

Initially I think that PPC & SEO should both be used in developing a business website, but as SEO strategies grow, PPC advertising should be somewhat reduced & potentially eliminated from your long-term strategies depending on your overall success in SEO development.
