The Power Of Link Building

December 9th, 2007 Rob Posted in Link Building No Comments »

The Web is built on links, & a solid link building strategy is absolutely essential for any business that wants to thrive online. In essence links that point back to your site do two things: they bring you targeted traffic & they enhance your search engine rankings.

By placing your links on another site that is related to your content, you can bring visitors to your site who are interested in the sort of content you offer. And Google, king of the search engines, places more value (and therefore greater rankings) on sites with multiple links pointing back to them.

I’m sure you have heard just about every urban myth imaginable regarding the right way vs. the wrong way to generate links back to your site. Let us forget about all the hoopla for now & look at the simple basics that apply to a good link building campaign.

The first obvious step is to identify placings that offer you targeted exposure. If you have a website about auto repair tips, you really need to find sites & directory categories pertaining to auto repair & place your links there.

Simple enough right? So let us focus on some of the specific types of sites you should be looking to get links from.

Link Directories:

This almost goes without saying, but just to be safe I will include it… One way link directories are a good place to submit your links.

Avoid services that offer to broker reciprocal linking between you & other webmasters, as these programs are often viewed as link farms by Google & can get your site booted from the search engine rankings.

Article Submission:

A fantastic way to acquire links back to your site is to write articles related to your site content & submit these to article directories & newsletter publishers. At the end of each article you write you will include a resource box (see mine below) that gives links back to your website.

Forum Signatures:

Join forums that are related to the theme of your site & get involved in the discussion. Please do not join a forum & just post a blatant ad about your site, as this will get you ridiculed & possibly deleted; actually join in the conversations, & include a link to your website in your forum signature.

Blog Comments:

You definitely need a blog of your own, but that is a subject for other articles. Clear? In this piece about link building I want you to understand the power of simply posting comments on other people’s blogs.

Find 10 to 20 blogs that relate to your website, & bookmark them or subscribe to their RSS feeds. A few times each week, visit these blogs & post comments on some of the more interesting articles.

You see, when you fill out the comment form you’ll be asked for your name & website URL, so you can create a hyperlink with your name or business name that leads right back to your site. Be sure that your comments are legitimate contributions & not just some silly ad for your website.

As blogs are often updated regularly, & have many incoming links to them, your comments (and therefore your link backs) are likely to receive a lot of traffic from search engine spiders & real people. And so… So blog comments are a simple but very powerful method for linking back to your site.

Take the contents of this article & put them to use. This is a totally easy, but definitely effective outline for starting a long-term link building campaign that will bring you lots of traffic & good standing with the search engines.

The Authentic Approach To Link Building

November 30th, 2007 Rob Posted in Link Building No Comments »

The whole on line world is just so complicated with the links & their effects on the web rankings that nearly no professional webmaster can deny their positive & powerful effect on the ranking & placement of websites in search engines.

When you’re going to analyze the complex system of pushing a website upper through the search engines pages, you should have a great company called links package.

Although content & word of the mouth can assist a new website jump start to some acceptable rankings, yet without the friendship of some authority links, your competitors will be relaxed as you’ll not actually be easily able to reach them when it comes to having traffic coming naturally & through the search engines.

Even the term link, can mean different things to different webmasters, while some pros might argue that they only observe some high PR & Gov & Edu links as powerful & workable, others might believe that the procedure can be more friendly by grabbing some blogs links or through some web directory listings.

Since the majority of web traffic is coming from the three brothers of Google, Yahoo & MSN, let us just take a close look at the way links are believed to be determining factors in the success of any website in the search engines.

For reaching the top positions in all the three main search engines, you need links. Until a few years ago, especially for getting to the top of Yahoo & MSN, some onpage tricks would do wonders.

But gradually these search engines too followed the path of Google in stressing more on the existence & power of links pointing to a website to specify the ranking of that website.

The links, can be established through a number of ways but not all the links can be called authority ones. There is more. The links will also act differently in each search engine, for example, Google always analyzes a link when it reaches it.

You might not actually be easily able to see the positive effect of the links established & listed in Google in a short period of time. People often have to wait for sometime before the links are adding values to their websites.

If you’re adding links to your older websites, you already are one step ahead than if you just want to commence optimizing your newly set up domain name.

Google is the leader among the other engines to value older domains a bit more than the new ones.

But Yahoo & MSN can be called more user friendly & by adding a few links, you can have some quick responses & jumps in the search engine rankings.

Please keep in mind to concentrate on the quality of the links established rather than the quantity. It is been seen that even one very powerful link can send a website to the first page of the search engines, but tens of minor, low quality links might do nothing.

The terms like authentic links can really be true when you search the web to finally add quality links to your website & very soon, your links will be flashing with power.

The real success story behind some websites getting to the top is behind the strength of the links pointing to them. In some cases, some quality & authority links can be bought, like purchasing the yearly Yahoo directory listing.

Such link will certainly have a great effect on your ranking, & all search engines, & especially Google will regard your website as a reliable website because the Google guys already know you respect your website & have already paid for an expensive link.

Powerful links are the ones from quality websites, & on pages that closely match your website subject & web field.

Please note that quality should be the primary idea  in your mind, & quality can not actually be achieved through rushing link building nor through purchasing many links overnight.

Search engines love the websites with patient webmasters & fresh content And powerful link popularity.

Many authority websites might have moderate PR strength yet being at the top of the search engines for the key terms specified.

So, if you’re in the middle of your optimization campaign, continue by searching for some quality links that will be effective for a long time & also add them one by one & not too quickly.

3 Things You Need To Know About Writing Articles

November 21st, 2007 Rob Posted in Link Building No Comments »

The significance of articles in traffic & link building is inestimable. And so… So far so good. When it comes to success & popularity by driving traffic to one’s web site, articles dictate the rules of the game.

Writing & submitting articles has become a key element in making a site popular because articles are one of the main factors that provide high ranking in search result pages. There is more. The better a site ranks, the bigger slice of the traffic flow pie he gets & with a higher traffic flow, there is more potential for profits from sales, affiliates programs, Adsense & so on.

The catch with the articles is that it’s not just about stuffing them into a web site. There are, as well, some basic requirements to be met in order to obtain the maximum benefits. A well written article will capture the interest of your visitors & keep them coming back for more. They may also recommend the articles they like, or even your site to other readers.

Here are the three most important factors you should ponder when writing your articles:

  1. Keywords:

Of course, virtually everyone has heard about them & their importance. An article must always be focused on keywords and/or keyword phrases. Right. When an Internet user is searching for something specific, he usually goes to a search engine & types in the keywords he is looking for. If your article has that keywords or key phrases, chances are that it will appear in the search results. But the important thing is that those keywords are related to your site. For instance, if you have a site that sells watches, you should write & post articles about watches. Clear? If this keyword mumbo jumbo looks too complicated, do not worry: you can find many tools on the Internet to help you find keywords & keyword phrases that are mostly sought out. By example, you can use the Google Keyword Tool or the Overture Keyword Tool. Another important factor for the articles ranking in the search engines is the so called keyword density. This is the percentage of words on a web page that match a specified set of keywords & can be often used as a factor in determining whether a web page is relevant to a specified keyword or keyword phrase. A very good article should have somewhere between ten to fifteen percent of keyword density in order make its presence remarked by the search engines.

If the keyword density is too high, search engines will interpret that as search spam or keyword stuffing. It it’s too low, your article will lose its relevance & may be ignored by the search engines.

  1. Content:

Like what’s stated above, you can not just fill up an article with keywords. There is more. The articles you write must be regarded as good reading materials. There is more. They must provide good information & help for the readers. Correct spelling & grammar are also essential. A word processor like Microsoft ™ Word can be very help-ful when it comes to spelling & grammar. The content of an article is absolutely critical. People are searching the Internet for figures, facts & statistics. You should provide in your articles as many facts as you can, as much good information as you can. If you do so, you’ll have good articles & good articles will boost your reputation as a real expert in your chosen field or topic. That reputation will make people to trust you & your products or services.

  1. Links:

If you’re going to submit articles to directories (which you definitively should!) DO NOT FORGET THE RESOURCE BOX! If you do, you have just lost some time writing. Do you follow? The resource box is the place where you can write a brief description of your site & ad links to it… People who are using free articles for their web sites or blogs, must keep those links when they publish the articles. There is more. That’s how, by submitting only one article to only one ezine, you could end up having tons of links directing to your site all over the Internet. And if some one likes your article & finds the information he was searching for in it, he will most likely click on the link directing to your site. That means: YOU HAVE A NEW CUSTOMER!

Which Websites Should You be Getting Links From?

November 12th, 2007 Rob Posted in Link Building No Comments »

Everyone knows the importance of links when it comes to increasing your search engine results. The first question you must ask is where to get links from. There’re two strategies here.

1. The most effective way to identify the ‘right’ sites to get links from should be based closely on who is linking to your competition defined by who outranks you on Google for your identified search term. Ideally you should be evaluating who links to the #1 search result in Google for the keywords or keyword phrases you are optimizing for. If you get the same sites to link to your site in the right way you will be in the top position on Google for that given keyword phrase.

There are a variety of methods to determine which sites are linking to the #1 result in Google for the keyword phrase you are targeting. Begin by identifying which site is in the #1 position for your search term. Once you have identified this site, do one of the following:

? Google Search. Go to Google.com & type in the following:
Link: www.competitor.com & press return. Be sure to replace the ‘competitor.com’ with the name of the site you have already identified as having the #1 position on Google for your search term.

The result will be a series of sites linking to your competitor. The only downside to this method is that you’ll not know which sites are more important than others (i.e. number of links linking into those sites, Google PR, keyword content on pages, etc.)

? Alexa. Go to Alexa.com & type in the name of the site you are researching. Alexa.com is a tool used to measure the popularity of sites using the Alexa toolbar. Because not virtually everyone uses the Alexa toolbar, the information is only directionally correct.

Once you get the resultant website, you’ll see a number of options listed. To the right of the thumbnail image, click ‘Sites Linking In’.

This option returns a list of sites that Alexa has identified as linking into the site you are researching. This can be an adequate starting spot for your link building campaign.

? Online SEO Tools. Using on line marketing tools to automatically generate a list of sites linking into your competitor’s site that gives link details (Google PR, Link text, Number of inbound links to competitor’s site, Page title, etc.) is the most effective way to generate a list of targeted sites for your link development efforts.

I’ve personally bought & used about a dozen different products to help me keep an eye on my competition & more importantly build an effective linking campaign. In less than 30 seconds some of these tools let you know exactly which sites are linking to the #1 positioned website & give you the information needed to contact them & request a link.

You can use whatever tool you want as long as it gives you a list of sites linking into your competitor & a way to prioritize that list. If you start to develop links from the highest quality sites first, your climb to the #1 spot on Google will happen that much faster.

? Identify Authority Websites. Authority websites are those sites linking to 3 or more of your competitors. You can save time by using an on line SEO tool to find these sites. Clear? If you do not have a tool at your disposal, you can achieve this manually using the following method:
1. Search for competitive sites by visiting Google & searching for your most important search term.
2. Create a spreadsheet of the top 100 sites ‘linking in’ to each of your top 5 competitors (Microsoft Excel is a good tool for this)
3. Sort Alphabetically
4. While looking at the list, see if any of the website URL’s are duplicated across your list. If the site appears 3 or more times, highlight it.
5. Once you have developed your list of competitive sites, you should visit each one to determine how your competitors are listed.

Once you have identified your Authority Websites, contact them. Model the strategy that your competitors have used. If these sites are Directories, look for a directory submission form. If the links are from articles that your competitors submitted, submit your own. If all you can locate is an email, ask the webmaster to include your site. You may also suggest a link exchange if the real opportunity arises.

How to Build Effective Links

November 4th, 2007 Rob Posted in Link Building No Comments »

One of the basic things that we attempt to achieve in website marketing is to get better natural search engine rankings. In order to make that happen, there’re many key things that you will have to do. In this article we will focus on the part of SEO that deals with link building.

When building links its important that you do it in the right way. Unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation & bad  practices out there when it comes to link building. So let us attempt & clear a few things up for you so that you can be sure to build your links in the most effective way. Effective Use of PageRank

As a reminder for all those of you who do not already know, PageRank is Google’s measure of the importance of a page. And so… So essentially it is a quality scale. Here’s the basics of how it works: if you can get a link on a page with a higher PageRank, that link will be more beneficial for you than a link on a page with a lower PageRank. So ideally, when we are out there searching for places to build links, we want to focus on those sites that have a decent PageRank. Start with a 3 & above. Higher is better of course, but do not actually be afraid to get links from lower PageRank sites.

One of the problems with just measuring your links according to PageRank is that it is not really up to date. On the back end, PageRank is changing all of the time. And so… So far so good. When Google does a ‘PageRank Update’, it simply means that they have decided to update the information that they publish to the public. So do not swear by PageRank 100%. Instead, use it as a general guideline.

Place Links on Related Sites

One of the big misconceptions out there about building links is that it only matters how many you get. Just build tons & tons of links with any sites that you can & it will help. I would not recommend following this policy! Whenever you’re doing link building, you want to keep you links coming from websites with a related topic as much as possible. In other words, it needs to make sense for your link to be on that page. By example, if you have a website that sells dog products, why would you want your link to show up on a site about how to lose weight? That does not make a lot of sense does it? We want to link with related websites.

Vary Your Anchor Text

When we talk about anchor text, we are talking about the words that you can click on in a hyperlink. When building links we want the anchors for our links to be our main keyword phrases. But we also do not want to use the exact same keyword phrase all of the time. By adding variety to our anchor text we avoid the problem of being penalized for overusing the phrase we are trying to get rankings for. So it is actually a good idea  from time to time to have the anchor for your links to be either your site name or even a general phrase like ‘click here’. You should also have many main phrases that you are trying to get traffic for. This alone with give you some good variety to your anchor text.

Various Types of Links

We should also have links from different types of sites as well (as long as the content is related). That’s why we do different link building methods like reciprocals, directories, articles, press releases, blogs, etc. All of these add up to be your site’s overall link profile. And so… So far so good. We want to add variety to the sites in our link profile if we are going to use an effective link-building strategy.

These are just a few main pointers to consider when developing your overall link building strategy. Let me give you an example of a very poorly constructed link building strategy (and it is one that is pretty common out there unfortunately): sign up with a link marketplace that does reciprocal links with any site out there & just get as many links as you possibly can with anybody. You will notice on some websites that when you go straight to their links or resources page they have hundreds of links with all different sites. There is more. This isn’t the very best way to do it!

Think about this: the internet is based closely on information. Search engines are trying to sort through that information to give the end user the most relevant results. So… So would not it make sense to mostly associate our site with other sites in the same topic or genre, thus improving the overall relevancy of the search results? Stick with related sites, vary your anchor text, & get different types of links. There is more. These are 3 of the backbones of an effective link building strategy.

Link Building to Increase Website Rankings

October 26th, 2007 Rob Posted in Link Building No Comments »

Search engines are placing a high value on Link Popularity. Link Popularity is defined as the total number of quality inbound links. There is more. To gain Link Popularity, websites should engage in Link Building campaigns. No, Link Building isn’t where two unrelated businesses exchange links or do reciprocal linking, nor is it the creation of web pages where each page is connected to the other - also known as a Link Farm.

Link Building is the process of creating one-way quality links to one’s own site using various strategies. Clear? In Link Building, linking to sites with relevant content is the most significant thing. By example, if an industrial tool manufacturer links to a company making cosmetics for no reason but to exchange links in an effort to create website popularity in search engines, then that is not a good link to have.

2) Why should you engage in Link Building campaigns?

When other websites think you you’re worth linking to, your website’s importance increases in the eyes of search engines. The reasoning here is that if there a lot of links pointing to your website, that means that your website has good content. When a website has good content & has website popularity due to a lot of inbound links, Search Engines consider the website ideal for top placement in searches.

3) Five good ways to win one-way, relevant links to your website

  • Provide content in your field of expertise on your website. This will interest others to place a link on their site to share this information with their visitors. Be sure to make the content easy to understand.
  • Create a list of ‘myths’ or ‘top 10 things to avoid’ on a particular topic in your field of expertise.
  • Create a list of ‘experts’ or ‘coaches’ in your field of expertise on your website. Then send the page link to the experts & coaches asking them if they may be willing to link to your website. Few will decline, given that they’re featured on your website
  • Create a Press Release & submit it to PR Web & other on line Press Release websites
  • Create blogs about topics in your field of expertise & place those blogs on relevant blog websites with a link to our website.

4) What are some Link Building pitfalls to avoid?

The two important pitfalls are the creation of Link Farms & participating in Three-way-linking.

  1. A Link Farm is a group of web pages created specially to interlink with each other. Link Farms are generally created to spam Search Engines. Right. When discovered, Search Engines ban websites that have participated in link farms.
  2. Three way link building is almost always done in an effort to boost the website’s rankings in search engines. Right. Web masters will build multiple sites & create links to their primary site from the other sites, in an effort to boost the rankings of their primary site. These three way links are designed to fool the search engines by creating artificially high link popularity for a website of their choosing.

5) Google Page Rank Google assigns a numeric value called Page Rank to show the importance of a web page. And so… So far so good. When one website page links to another, Google believes that the website generating the link is casting a vote of confidence towards the website in question, by linking to it… A site is considered important to Google when it has lots of one-way relevant links & uses that as one factor to give the website higher rankings.

Although this isn’t the only factor that determines website importance, it’s an important one for sure.

In conclusion Link Building is an important activity to make your website get higher rankings in search engines. Clear? It should be combined with search engine optimization, pay per click, & other on line & offline marketing strategies.

If you’re outsourcing your Link Building activities, make certain you ask the outsourced providers about the processes they follow to identify relevant websites that they will, on your behalf, submit Link Building requests to.

Conducting a Successful Link Building Campaign

October 17th, 2007 Rob Posted in Link Building No Comments »

Google has always been on the forefront of search engine algorithm advancements. Their most recent algorithm places an increased emphasis on not just backlinks, but quality backlinks. Gone now are the days in which free for all link farms & massive reciprocal link schemes will deliver instant rankings. Not only will these not help you anymore, in most cases they will hurt you… Despite this, if you put a little bit of time into it, building quality backlinks isn’t all that difficult.

Quality Backlinks

There are a variety of pieces that go into determining the quality of a website’s backlinks, & each of them can be influenced in some way. For Google, the PageRank (PR) of the website linking to you is one of the most significant pieces of the puzzle. Even though Yahoo & MSN do not have a visible equivalent to PR, a site linking to you that in turn has many high quality backlinks will always be worth more. When searching for link building opportunities do your best to generate backlinks from high PR (4 & up) sites first, & then for lower PR sites. Even though not confirmed (Google does not often divulge this kind of thing) it’s thought that for each increase of one in PR the value of the backlink, assuming all other things are constant, doubles. So, PageRank is obviously important, however it is not the whole story.

Having a high PR website all about dogs link to your site about cars will not do all that much for you… In addition to your content, search engines use the content of sites linking to you to determine what your website is all about. So, do your best to identify relevant, high PR websites for your link building campaign. The last piece of the puzzle lies in how your backlinks are formatted. The search engines give more credence to links that come from within body text, & backlinks that have descriptive, keyword-rich anchor text. Even though you do not have much control over how & where other webmasters place your links, you can influence the how by providing your link code, & the where by ensuring that your website is relevant to their visitors. Some of this might seem a little confusing, so the next section goes into more detail on where best to go straight to generate quality backlinks.

Generate Backlinks

There are a enormous variety of ways to generate backlinks & this list is far from exhaustive, so I encourage you to keep your eyes open for linking opportunities at all times. Even though very little traffic will ever come from directories & they sometimes have the appearance of link farms, they’re where most new webmasters start. Despite what seem to be negatives, there’re many directories that will deliver you great high PR backlinks. The most popular & well known directory is DMOZ (Open Directory Project), & even though it can take a long time to get your site reviewed, I recommend submitting there no matter what.

Beyond that, do a search for web directories, identify the ones that have high PR, & those that are relevant to your websites content, & submit away. Another effective way to build backlinks is by showing other webmasters that your site can provide a valuable resource to their visitors. Contact the webmaster through e-mail & explain how you can be a valuable resource, provide your linking code, & a description of your website. Some webmasters may ask you for a reciprocal link, & even though this isn’t ideal, if the other website is relevant to yours, it will help with search engine rankings. One of my favorite methods is to build links by writing articles & submitting them to free article directories.

These directories are set up for webmasters to get free content for their sites; however they’re required to leave the author bio that you write at the bottom of the articles. So make certain your bio includes a link to your site with strong, keyword-rich anchor text. Finally, become a member of the on line community with which your website is related. Find blogs, & forums that have similar topics, sign-up & start asking & answering questions, & sharing your knowledge. By providing links to your site in your signature you can generate enormous numbers of relevant backlinks.

Final Thoughts

Link building is time consuming, & at times it can be frustrating, but by doing these things you’re creating a strong base for your website to grow. After a few months, these links will ‘mature’ & you will start moving up the search engine rankings. In the meantime, these links can provide you with a source of traffic without relying entirely on Google or Yahoo.

Suicide in Cyberspace - Your Outward Links Can Kill Your Rankings

October 8th, 2007 Rob Posted in Link Building 1 Comment »

Link building strategies have, for most people for a long time, revolved around reciprocal link exchanges. Right. Whilst most people understand that links are important, they generally do not understand why this is so. In a nutshell, a link to your site has traditionally been accepted by Search Engines as a vote for your site. A link from a topic or theme-related site to yours is better than a link from a site having a completely different topic. An important site’s link to yours carries more weight - for example from The Open Directory, or Yahoo Directory. All pretty straightforward…

BUT… the rules have changed… significantly! All the thinking webmasters worked diligently to build links - willy-nilly - in order to subvert the search engine rankings & gain an advantage to themselves at the expense of virtually everyone else. For a long time, there have been mutterings about this, & comments from Google staffers about possible penalties from linking to “bad neighbourhoods’” & - heaven forbids it - purchasing links! Google et al simply do not approve of willy-nilly link-building schemes, & have recently tightened the screws a bit more, in two notable ways…

Bad Links Some links are bad… for example, if you’re a car sales company & you have got dozens of completely irrelevant links to international hotel sites… yeah, YOU know the ones! in Prague, Munich, Shanghai etc! That’s a BAD neighbourhood over there! That IS going to put a world of hurt on you! And as for the Free For All link sites, web rings, & 3 way link schemes… that is just suicide in cyberspace! Why? Coz its a blatant & completely indefensible attempt at cheating the system!

Reciprocal Links - Almost a Waste of Effort

Reciprocal links are still of some value, providing the link titles are explicit, & if the page they link to you from has a higher Page Rank than the page from which you link to them. The concept of a link to you being a vote for you, & being added to your site’s Total Vote Count has a flip side. A link from you to some one else essentially deducts one vote from your total vote count… meaning its value is minimal when compared to a 1-way incoming back-link!

1-way Outward Links Are Toxic

Ok, lets assume you’re a service provider, maybe a health clinic, & you deal with hospitals, other doctors, specialists, nurses, laboratories. So… So, as a benefit to your visitors, you place direct links to their web resources on your links page. Is that clever?

Most certainly it’s NOT! Transfusion time, because you will be haemorrhaging Page Rank with nothing in return! Do it, but be smart about it, because there is NOTHING to be gained (by you) from linking to any site that doesn’t link back. So make certain your links include the “nofollow” attribute that tells SE’s that the link is NOT a vote by your site for that site!

Link Content Is Mission Critical

This is mission critical because Google & other have decided that they can not trust you to be honest about your site! Basically, it seems like there’re two web tribes - those who know not so much about how things work, & those who know more than they should. There should also be a flourishing third tribe, who just build great sites with lots of terrific content that automatically ranks highly - but nobody’s seen nuthin’ from those guys for ages!

The tribe who know more than they should ruthlessly manipulate every available loophole to dominate search engine rankings, at the expense of those who have yet to read SEO For Dummies. There is more. Therefore, Google decided that its essential that there is some external correlation between what YOU say your site is about, & what OTHER people say your site is about… This is done by analysing the words in the Link Title on all links pointing to your site. Bottom line here is - if a keyword phrases does NOT appear on links to your site, you ain’t gonna rank for that phrase!

For many established sites, this is the main reason they might have experienced a noticeable decline in rankings in the last few months. Most older sites will have a majority of incoming links based closely on their business name, & NOT on their activities / products / services / location etc. To use the common “widgets” analogy - if you’re selling “widgets” & all your incoming link Titles have your only business name e.g. Smiths Manufacturing Co Ltd, its now very hard for you to rank for “widgets”!

Backlink analysis reveals this shortcoming rather rapidly and, lucky for you, it’s possible to remedy this by building 1-way incoming back-links using multiple Title / Description combinations that contain a good spread of relevant keywords. Clear? It does require some keyword research, & it’s tedious - but if you do not do it, you’re certainly not going forwards! But your competitors might be…
